Hamas leader to pass letter to captured Israeli

Saturday, September 06, 2008 7:06:22 AM

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - A Hamas official says the militant group promises to deliver a letter to captured Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit from his father.

Hamas' political bureau member Mohammed Nasr told The Associated Press Saturday that the emir of Qatar gave the letter to Khaled Mashaal during four-way Damascus summit with Syria, France and Turkey.

"What has been requested is to pass the letter to Schalit," Nasr said. "Khaled Mashaal has received the letter and promised to pass it to Schalit."

On Thursday, French officials said the letter from Schalit's father, Noam, is to be handed over to the emir of Qatar, who is to pass it to Mashaal.

Schalit has been held by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip for the past two years.
