EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Conor Casey's third goal of the game, a volley with a little more than a minute remaining, gave the Colorado Rapids a 5-4 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night.
The deciding score came when Casey made his way past two Red Bulls defenders and put his volley past New York goalie Jon Conway in the 90th minute.
Newly acquired Matthew Mbuta had tied it in the 74th minute when he scored off a crossing pass from fellow newcomer Macoumba Kanji. That followed a first half that saw three lead changes and three ties before Colorado (10-12-4) took a 4-3 lead at the break.
The Rapids got on the board quickly when Omar Cummings scored an unassisted goal in the third minute after Casey collided with Conway.
New York (9-9-8) answered two minutes later when Mike Magee scored his fifth goal of the season, but Casey gave his team the lead again in the 11th minute when he split two Red Bull defenders and beat Conway for a 2-1 lead.
Juan Pablo Angel knotted the score when he converted a penalty kick in the 34th minute for his 11th goal of the season, and New York took a 3-2 lead in the 40th minute when Dane Richards redirected a pass from Juan Pietravallo past Rapids goalie Preston Burpo.
Former New York defender Mike Petke then tied it for the Rapids in the 43rd minute when he scored his second goal of the season, and Casey scored again two minutes later on a penalty kick.
The teams nearly tied the MLS record for goals in a half. It was set in 1996, when Kansas City and Columbus combined for eight second-half goals in a 6-4 Kansas City victory.
