Rapids appoint Gary Smith as new head coach

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 4:12:32 PM

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) - The Colorado Rapids removed the interim tag from Gary Smith's title and made him the sixth head coach of the Major League Soccer franchise.

Smith took over on an interim basis after former coach Fernando Clavijo left the team for personal reasons in August. Smith coached the Rapids to a month of undefeated play in September and three road wins.

Smith joined the Rapids in February, after being a full-time coach and professional player in England. He spent one year with Colchester United, two years with Barnet and four years with Fulham.

Colorado was knocked out of playoff contention last month, finishing the season 11-14-5.
