Israeli settlers riot in Arab neighborhood

Tuesday, December 02, 2008 1:06:02 AM

HEBRON, West Bank (AP) - The Israeli military says hundreds of Israeli settlers rioted in the predominantly Palestinian city of Hebron in reaction to a court ruling.

The violence erupted late Monday near a house in Hebron that has been taken over by Jewish settlers. The ownership is under dispute in a Jerusalem court, but the Supreme Court ordered the settlers to leave immediately. Instead, several hundred more extremists have flocked to the site to help resist eviction.

On Monday evening, rumors were circulating that the Israeli military would evict the settlers by force.

In apparent response, the military says rioters broke windows of cars and homes and defaced a Muslim cemetery in the area near the house. Settlers in several other locations in the West Bank also blocked roads and threw stones at Palestinian cars.
